The Irish Open is a European Tour golf tournament which is currently played in May each year. It was first played in 1927 and continued until 1950, when the tournament experienced financial problems. Except for a single event, held in 1953, there was a 25 year hiatus until the Irish Open returned in 1975.
From 2007 to 2009 the Irish Open will be held at the Adare Golf Club, part of the Adare Manor Hotel and Golf Resort in County Limerick. The tournament has previously had various title sponsors, but the owner of the resort wishes to emphasise the tournament's status as his country's national open, and as such there is currently no title sponsor. However, a number of non-title sponsors has enabled the prize fund to increase to €2,500,000, which is mid range for a European Tour event.
The Irish Open is played the week before the European Tour's "home tournament" the BMW PGA Championship, which helps it to attract fairly strong fields. The tournament's 2005 rating in the Official World Golf Rankings system was high enough for the winner to qualify for the WGC-NEC Invitational. As of 2008, it is the only European Tour event played in Ireland, with the European Open, formerly held at the K Club, having been moved to a new home in London.
