About Italian Open

The Methorios Capital Italian Open, as it is currently known for sponsorship reasons, is the Italian national open golf championship for men. It was founded in 1925 and has been part of the European Tour's schedule since the tour's first season in 1972.

The Italian Open is currently played in May and at the Castello di Tolcinasco Golf and Country Club near Milan, with a prize fund in 2008 of €1.7 million, which is one of the smaller purses among the European Tour events played in Europe itself.

In 2008, South African Hennie Otto was just one stroke away from the tournament aggregate record of 262, set by Percy Alliss in 1935 on the course at San Remo, which even by the standards of the day was relatively short, at just 5,200 yards.
